Workshop

A hands-on two-day course for veterinarians, students and veterinary technicians who want to develop their skills in working with exotic patients – mammals, birds and reptiles. The course is led by the internationally recognised specialist Dr. Melinda de Mul and combines theory with intensive practical work on real clinical cases.

Day 1

  • 08:30–08:45 Registration
  • 09:00–09:50 Clinical examination of mammals
  • 09:50–10:45 Clinical investigations in mammals
  • 10:45–11:00 Break
  • 11:00–13:00 Practical sessions: clinical examination, IV catheter placement and intubation in mammals
  • 13:00–14:00 Lunch
  • 14:00–14:30 Interpretation of blood tests in mammals
  • 14:30–15:30 Diagnostic imaging in mammals
  • 15:30–15:45 Break
  • 15:45–17:00 Practical sessions on diagnostic imaging in mammals

Day 2

  • 09:00–11:00 Clinical examination of birds, clinical procedures, interpretation of blood tests and radiographic projections
  • 11:00–11:15 Break
  • 11:30–12:30 Practical sessions: clinical examination, handling and radiographic projections in birds
  • 12:30–13:30 Lunch
  • 13:30–15:30 Clinical examination of reptiles, clinical procedures, interpretation of blood tests and radiographic projections
  • 15:30–17:00 Practical sessions: clinical examination, clinical procedures and diagnostic imaging in birds and reptiles
  • 17:00–17:30 Handing out of certificates of successful completion

Dr. Melinda de Mul

Exotic animals

Dr. Melinda de Mul was born and raised in the Netherlands and is a graduate of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, being one of the first to complete the “Conservation Medicine” specialisation, which allowed her to gain practical experience in the medicine of zoo and wild animals. After graduating in 2009, she took her first job as a veterinarian at the “Animo” veterinary clinic in Sofia, and in May 2010 moved to the Central Veterinary Clinic, where she spent the next ten years as a veterinarian, working mainly with exotic pets and many of the animals at Sofia Zoo. On several occasions she has assisted the World Parrot Trust with examinations and care for confiscated African grey parrots. In 2021 she co-founded “Bunny Rescue Bulgaria” and has since performed many rabbit neutering procedures as well as dental work. She is a member of the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians, the European Association of Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarians, and the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians.
